Bataan Nuclear Power PlantRevival talks on the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) seemed to have simmered down a bit. Maybe its because of the Easter holidays that have not only the legislative branches of the Philippines, but rather the entire country, put in holiday mode. One of the main opponents of the controversial bill to revive the power plant, the very powerful Catholic Church, seemed to also have been hampered down with the “busy”ness of the season.

During this off season of Lent, I took a chance to look at the devastation wrought about by the disaster of the Nuclear Plant in Chernobyl. A Flickr Search on Chernobyl brought these very graphic images. Who knows?, maybe all those who oppose and are for the BNPP could benefit from looking at these images.

Part three of the report by Prof. Kelvin S. Rodolfo’s on the Geological and Natural Hazard’s to the operation of the Bataan Nuclear powerplant shows that Mt. Natib, which lies next the the decommissioned power plant, has been recorded to have been active with earthquakes since 1973. Some of which have occurred within 25 km of the power plant. The most recent of which had a magnitude of 4.6 and occurred on June 24, 1991.

Another thing that has to be explored are the lineament’s (topographic feature having a linear configuration [ex. ridges or depressions]) around the plant area. Whether or not they are indeed indicators to natural fault lines which could potentially cause earthquakes.

Provincial Board of Bataan file resolution to Oppose revival of Nuclear Power PlantThe provincial board of Bataan voted 6-3 in favor of opposing the revival of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP). Board Members Rod Izon said he and Orlando Miranda sponsored the resolution in support of the Bataan Governor’s (Gov. Enrique Garcia) request.

The resolution sited safety and public expense as to the reason why they are in opposition of House Bill 4631 authored by Rep. Mark Conjuangco that seeks to revive the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant. They are open however to using the BNPP for other uses, but not electricity generation by nuclear power.
