Copy of the Reproductive Health Bill of the Philippines

GMA News made available a copy of the controversial Reproductive Health Bill that is pending and hotly debated by Congress, the Philippine Government and most especially the very powerful Catholic Church that is opposing its passing.

President and Bishops have meal to discuss RH BillPhilippine President, Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, met with bishops of the Catholic Church last monday along with some members of his cabinet with regards to discussing his stand on the Reproductive Health Bill. The President was able to give his side while the Catholic Church assured him that he would not be excommunicated.

President Aquino shared lunch at his home in Bahay Pangarap within the grounds of Malacanang palace with 4 bishops of the Catholic Church. These bishops were Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, Cavite Bishop Luis Antonio Tagle, Cagayan de Oro Bishop Antonio Ledesma and Tandag Bishop Nerio Odchimar, chair of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP)

DSWD's job made difficult by overpopulationDepartment of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) head, Corazon “Dinky” Soliman, said that her department is feeling the brunt of the population issue and that they are well behind the government’s efforts to pass the Reproductive Health Bill.

In line with this, most recently lawmakers raised the issue of the increase in the budget allocation given to the DSWD to be used for poverty alleviation programs and whether they were deserving of this increase.

Congress once again failed to pass a bill to help arrest the population growth that is spiralling out of control. Major reason why all population control measures get waylaid is because of the opposition of the very powerful Catholic Church to artificial means of reproduction control because of the right to life and the belief that children are a blessing from God.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines’ (CBCP) once again reiterated its position on the reproductive health bill pending at the House of Representatives as that of being unchanged in its opposition to it. Sorsogon Bishop Arturo M. Bastes, SVD, said in an interview that “the CBCP will not change its position on the RH bill because its provisions are anti-family and anti-life.”

He explained the bill is against the teachings of the Catholic church “especially protecting life in abortion” and people have been told of the involved issues.
