Update:Turns out that the Times was mistaken in quoting Wissner-Gross as having said that it consumes that much energy to execute a Google search.

Google searche consumes a lot of energyHarvard University Physicist, Alex Wissner-Gross, says that two search queries in Google consumes enough electricity to boil a kettle of tea. Considering that there are about 200m searches on Google per day, that is about a lake full of boiling water.

A plea to tread lightly this Christmas by the DENRChristmas has always been about the birth our Saviour, Jesus Christ. The celebration that happens along with this has been turned into one consumer fiesta by marketers and businesses. Not that we’re saying that consumption is bad. Its when we let it get out of hand that it becomes bad.

With this comes a plea from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to Celebrate Christmas and the Holidays in an Eco friendly way.

Converting Kitchen Waste into Biogas or methane in a biodigesterWhen people say biogas feedstock, people will most often associate it to manure. Well that’s not entirely the case because basically anything that biodegrades can be turned into biogas (methane) and then used for energy.

Biogas harvesting involves placing organic waste products mixed with a set amount of water in an oxygen free biodigester. Via anaerobic digestion, the organic waste is broken down into methane and solid waste by bacteria living in the biodigester.

NCCC Reusable Bag

A few months back NCCC Mall, the store where we regularly buy our groceries from, started offering their own version of the reusable shopping bag. Its being sold for just P55.00 ($1=P49) and comes in the store’s colors, which is predominantly blue with a dash of yellow. Reusable shopping bags can be used by customers to carry their groceries in instead of the more common method of a plastic bag.

Reviving Nickel Cadmium Batteries

Here’s an interesting post that shows you how you can revive your old nickel-cadmium batteries (Ni-Cad) by adding a high dosage of voltage to them.

The theory is that sulfur crystals that have formed in a battery from prolonged use are what’s causing the batteries to be “dead” because they short its two poles together. Adding a high voltage to the battery causes the sulfur crystals to vaporize effectively unshorting the two terminals.

Was watching the news yesterday evening and saw a feature on the Ecostore in Taguig. The Ecostore carries a wide array of recycled and organic products. The short clip showed some products that would make great gifts for this Christmas season because they help raise awareness on going green and protecting the environment. Not to mention, look fashionably cool while you’re at it.
